Laura’s Story

Site created on August 26, 2018

Laura Jung Hubbard has a smile that lights up every room. Her physical beauty is only eclipsed by her love for the Savior, her family, and the selfless way she cares for others. Laura has recently received a challenging diagnosis. We, a few of her MANY friends, have been asked to create a website so that family and friends can stay informed about Laura's treatment, specific prayer requests, and ways to help. As you read her story below, please be mindful to pray for our sweet friend and to leave Laura a message of encouragement (scroll to bottom of page to leave "Thoughts and Well Wishes.")

In early August, Laura began experiencing some middle back and upper abdominal pain. A trip to the ER led doctors to suspect histoplasmosis that had spread to her liver. Unfortunately, after further testing (including multiple biopsies, CTs and other scans), Laura received a diagnosis of extra pulmonary small cell carcinoma of unknown primary origin.  Oncologists do not believe this to be related to the thyroid cancer Laura beat in 2013 or her lung disease,  lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). The cancer is said to be aggressive and doctors are treating it as such. The treatment plan for Laura is as follows: 3 day chemo treatment every three weeks for 18 weeks (a total of six rounds). In the meantime, doctors will search for opportunities for specifically targeted drug therapy.

Please check back often for journal updates to include prayer requests and perhaps a link to a meal train in the coming weeks. Thanks in advance for your prayers!

Journal entry by Kim Jones

Today we pause to honor and celebrate our sweet Laura. The sun is shining here in Hendersonville. I am torn between appreciating its warmth and begrudging it’s seemingly cruel cheeriness. But I am thankful for nice weather on the day we say, “see you later” to my friend.

I have sought quiet time this morning to talk to God and see if I can hear from Him. I stumbled upon a reading about grief and how we, as Christians, move forward when we are crushed by a blow from which we’re sure we’ll never recover. I think that we begin to move forward by lamenting.  To lament means, “to express sorrow or deep grief.” But for the Christ follower, it means taking this sorrow - full of it’s “whys” and anger and fear - and laying it at the feet of Jesus. Lamenting holds the tension between our mourning and our faith that God is still good. It begs God for answers while trusting that He is sovereign. Lamenting is God’s gift to us. It shows us that God is big enough to answer our deepest questions while continuing to hold us up. Lamenting draws us near to God when it seems we can’t find our way.

We all lament today. We laugh and cry and doubt and ask. But, in the end, we will trust God’s goodness, thank Him for our beautiful Laura, and rejoice that life is but a vapor and that we will see her again in just a little while.

Jesus be near as we lament.
