Journal

Surgery is over and i am holding a sleeping Landon in recovery. He is  running a slight fever now which is not normal for him even though it can happen after anesthesia. His post-op nurse is checking with his doctors before we can leave. It is much later now and i have time to update finally. We went home about 1:30 pm with two balloons; one was for Griffin, and boy was he thrilled to have a balloon today. Before discharge, I learned that they had to make sure he didn't have a fever from a rupture due to his esophagus being stretched open to a larger width. Fortunately, his fever responded to a dose of Tylenol because for a few minutes they were talking about possibly keeping him overnight! The very good news is there was absolutely no evidence of a stricture (a narrowing of his esophagus) at the repair site! I was so relieved about this news! I teared up when his surgeon told me and i saw his surgeon's eyes twinkling as he repeated this information for me. This means Landon will (likely) not be needing another dilation for some time. Despite choking on food and water his esophagus did not seem to have narrowed since February. His surgeon wondered if maybe the issue is swallowing and chewing in the upper esophagus. He is following up with speech therapy about the swallowing and GI due to increased reflux this winter/spring. He said being sick could also change his swallowing patterns. He was able to open his esophagus up to 15 mms today and that was what he hoped to accomplish today! 18mms is approximately an adult size esophagus for reference. Anyways, thank you all so much for the positive thoughts, energy, prayer, love and support today. It was a very exciting outcome today! Landon goes to see his GI doctor and dietician Wednesday 5/3 so i will let you know how that goes as well.
