Kyle’s Story

Site created on December 1, 2021

Kyle was diagnosed with testicular cancer in March of 2021 and unfortunately he had a recurrence of the cancer that has metastasized in both his left and right lungs. We are using this site to update family and friends as he prepares for a lengthy battle starting with chemo soon. If you want to support us financially as we go through this process once again, there is a "ways to help" tab above with a link to a GoFundMe our friends set up for us.  You can also venmo me directly @laceylboone. Please keep in mind that all donations made through the CaringBridge tribute section do not go to us, but rather to the CaringBridge website to keep its platform running. Thank you for the support!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Lacey Boone

The last month has been pretty great for the Boone family. We moved into our dream home, Kyle got to go to the Final Four in New Orleans and watch my Kansas Jayhawks win a National Championship, we celebrated Gracelynn's 2 years (and 2 months) birthday now that we can be around people again, Kyle had a great guys weekend fishing getaway and we had our first Sunday back at church after 2 years away (yes, I sobbed the entire time). Kyle's hair is starting to grow back and we swear he wakes up with tons more hair every morning. He does have some side effects from chemo that are still hanging around, which makes walking or running pretty painful. You'll never hear him complain but you can tell it's uncomfortable to him.

Kyle had his two month scans/appointment this week and things overall are looking better! The radiology report sent us into panic when they mentioned two spots - one spot on his right lung (which we knew about) and a spot on his upper left lung (the lung where the spot in the lower portion disappeared last scan) yet the report also said no new growth. Confusing, we know.

But after meeting with the oncologist, he said it looks fine and that he suspects it isn’t a spot and is likely the bronchial tube.  His labs also didn't show anything to make us think it was active cancer. In fact, his tumor markers -- which reflect how much cancer is in his body -- even dropped from last month after it was already in a normal range post-chemo. Now does that mean we aren’t still very nervous about it? Absolutely not.

The spot on the right lung is still there at 2mm (previously 3mm) so there is no growth, which is great! Kyle’s liver numbers were high so we have to do blood work again in 3 weeks to see what’s up there. He had previous weird liver numbers so it's likely from the ridiculous amount of chemo he has gone through the last year. We will also do scans again July 1. Surgery isn't off the table quite yet but waiting to hear back from the thoracic surgeon and see how his liver is doing first.

We also found out this week that it's very unlikely we'll be able to have another baby, at least not as we planned it. We knew this was likely after Kyle went through two separate chemo treatments within the last year, but we were hoping perhaps his swimmers would find their way back upstream. Alas. Fortunately, he did freeze samples right before he underwent chemo last year, though they've recommended IVF as our only option because even those samples weren't very good in terms of motility (and some other fancy fertility words!) We debated sharing this part of our story so soon as we're still working through it emotionally but this week is National Infertility Awareness Week so might as well be open and honest and lean on others who have experienced things like this (y'all know who you are - we love you and thank you for helping us through this). We really hope to one day give Gracelynn Jo a sibling and know she will be the greatest big sister ever when that day comes.

Prayer requests for the coming months:

  • For Kyle's neuropathy in his feet to improve
  • Positive labs in 3 weeks and recovered liver numbers
  • Wonderful scans on July 1
  • Knowledge to make the right decisions as we learn more about IVF, what our options are and deciding when the time is right
  • Continued joy in our lives. We've really loved this last month and want to keep these smiles on our faces!
