Kyle’s Story

Site created on December 17, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Many of you may not know, but Kyle started feeling sick a few weeks ago and was sent home from work thinking he had contracted COVID.  He took a COVID test right away, but it came back negative.  But a couple of weeks later, he still wasn’t feeling well, so he got another test and another negative.  On December 16th (yesterday), the doctors decided to run some blood work to see if there was something else going on.  They told him that he’d hear back in about 3 to 4 days.  But he got a call today from his Doctor’s letting him know that his white blood cell counts were very high and that he likely has Leukemia.

He was told to head to the Emergency Room where an Oncologist from Hastings met him and they ran more tests and blood work and confirmed the diagnosis.  At this time all we know is that he has Acute Leukemia, but we don’t know much more.  He will be getting a bone marrow test done tomorrow morning which will help the oncologists determine what we are dealing with and then we should have more answers and a course of treatment.

At this time, they are expecting that Kyle may be in the hospital for over a month.  😢. They have a strict “No Visitor” policy at this time, but Jody is with him and they made an exception for his Dad to be with him for a bit tonight after just learning of the news today.

Kyle is in good spirits, but scared and unsure of what is ahead and we want him to know how loved and supported he is, even if we can’t physically be by his side (which is what we all would prefer).

Either Jodi, his Dad (Shawn), or myself will be updating this page and keep friends and family updated.  I’m sure Kyle will love hearing from everyone as well.

Where is all the Minnesota snow? I want it now b/c I don't have to drive Kyle to Cannon Falls Mayo Clinic Hospital Again until mid February!

During Kyle's Mayo Clinic appt today, his Doctor was extremely pleased with his progress. He's been in a major molecular response close to being undetectable on the lowered targeted leukemia treatment dosage since August.

Up until now, he was still having blood work done every month in Cannon Falls Mayo Hospital to be shipped overnight to Rochester for stat results.

His appetite is up and he's gained 20 pounds. All his other blood counts hit normal range last month. This month platelets dipped slightly below normal but he's doing well.

His Doctor really likes Kyle and he has a great sense of humor and wants to see him in Rochester in April.

Merry Christmas!
