Kyle’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.

In October 2019 Kyle tore his Achilles’ tendon and needed surgery. He spent months recovering and eventually started physical therapy in March 2020 where he began impact training including running and jumping. As Kyle tried to attempt these exercises he noticed pain in his back that concerned him. His trainer thought this could possibly be a result of Kyles body being deconditioned from resting during recovery. Over time the pain increased and physical therapy was put on hold.
(Fast forward to August)
The pain was intensifying. Kyle began going to the doctor where he had MRIs, X-rays and still no answers. Eventually he had a bone density test and doctors diagnosed him with osteopenia (a condition that occurs when the body doesn’t make new bone as quickly as it reabsorbs old bone). He was still in a significant amount of pain and the diagnosis didn’t seem to make sense. The pain was becoming so unbearable that most days he was unable to walk.
Finally on October 19th Kyle hit his breaking point. The pain was so excruciating that he needed to go to the emergency room. The first thing doctors did was a blood test. When the results came back the doctors seemed very alarmed.  His inflammation marker was off the charts and his hemoglobin was low. Next they did an MRI where they discovered 3 fresh fractures along his spine and what appeared to be lesions. In order to get an exact diagnosis Kyle was admitted to the hospital for an additional 3 days for more testing. On day 2 of being in the hospital Kyle had an additional MRI, more blood work and a bone marrow biopsy that confirmed he has cancer called multiple myeloma. Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell and in result can weaken your bones.
As of right now Kyle is in a back brace that prevents him from injuring his back even more. He will complete 4 rounds of chemotherapy along with a stem cell transplant in March.

Journal entry by Nikki Sticha

The anticipation has been killing us this week! Kyle had his first bone marrow biopsy post transplant on Monday along with a PET scan and blood work. This morning we met with his doctor at the U of M to get those results and WOW. All lab work came back good and there is NO evidence of multiple myeloma cells!! The doctor said Kyle’s results couldn’t have come back any better!🙌🏻

Kyle has been working full time, is back to working out and has been off pain medication for a month and half. He’ll continue routine checkups frequently and will be on maintenance medication for at least 3 years. We are finally feeling like life is normal again and it feels so good! TODAY IS A GOOD DAY❤️
