Kyle’s Story

Site created on April 3, 2018

Welcome friends and family! Thank you for checking Kyle's Caring Bridge Site. We will be using it to update you as he continues to progress from inpatient to outpatient rehab, from small steps to big ones and everything in between. We are truly beyond thankful for every single person that has called, sent a text, card, e-mail and came by to visit. It is both encouraging and comforting to know he has such an incredible support team standing behind him.

With that being said, let's start with saying Kyle will get through this stronger and more resilient than he came into this season. We are grateful  for the opportunity to strengthen, grow and develop the skills necessary to master the physical therapy exercises he practices daily. In God's time he will be back!

A quick backstory to catch you up to speed: Kyle had a freak accident fall on Friday, March 16 in our home in Pensacola, Fla., causing a severe spinal cord injury. The GOOD NEWS is even though this caused temporary loss of feeling in his legs and feet, the diagnosis was an "incomplete injury," meaning we can (and should) have a COMPLETE RECOVERY!! Kyle was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital the night of the incident and promptly had surgery the next day. He spent a few days recovering there and has since transferred to West Florida Rehabilitation Center, also here in Pensacola.

We have been adjusting well to the inpatient therapy at West Florida. Kyle is busy all seven days of the week completing a strict regimen of physical and occupational  therapy. He works hard to earn his new favorite cookies from Subway downstairs! We are projected to stay here until April 20 and will then be transferred to outpatient therapy and sent home! I will be working on my baking skills for the next few weeks to ensure my cookie recipes are up to Kyle's standards!! Currently, he has feeling in his legs and we are still waiting for his feet to wake up. In one week, he has gone from not being able to stand to walking about 30 steps with the help of a standing table and his therapist! He is continuing to make small, yet monumental improvements daily! Most importantly, his spirits remain high!

THANK YOU AGAIN for all the good wishes, prayers and thoughtful notes! We are so blessed and thankful! However, our biggest and only request for now, is to PLEASE KEEP THE PRAYERS COMING!! We are doing well managing meals, time and the precious dogs! If anything changes or if we are in need of any assistance, I will be sure to update you all!

May God bless each and every one of you. Thank you for your constant love and support as we transition through these next few months!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Amy Cozad

So this past week, something happened that quite frankly, nobody would have imagined.  Over seven months ago, I was in ICU and never projected to do anything outside of a wheelchair.  While I was in ICU, my son Dan and his girlfriend Riley visited us in Pensacola.  They saw me while I was heavily medicated.  They saw me when I could barley feed myself, let alone roll over without assistance in my hospital bed.  They witnessed my transfer from ICU to some unknown “inpatient rehabilitation treatment center” where we had no idea on what to expect.

And then they left.  Dan left a dad who had been healthy and strong all his life.  Dan left a dad who had an uncertain future.  And as Dan left - Kyle told him to worry about himself.  Focus on flying.  Focus on your mission.  And I will focus on getting better.  And as he headed out to his first deployment, Amy made him a promise.  “Don’t worry, son.  When you get back, Dad will walk up and give you a hug.”

Now from Kyle’s perspective, he was worried about “overselling” what he might be able to do.  After all, none of his doctors were that optimistic.  Kyle didn’t want to disappoint Dans expectations for when he returned.

Well, last week, I witnessed a miracle.  As Dan flew his helicopter in from his first deployment, Kyle and I were there to to watch that amazing landing.  Dan flew in, and as I held my breath, Kyle walked across the flight line - and in a moment that I had dreamed about for seven months, father and son hugged for the first time since Kyle had been in ICU.  Take a look at the picture - God is good!
