Kylar’s Story

Site created on August 2, 2022

On Monday, August 1st, 2022, Kylar Smith, son to Tommy and Sylvia Smith, was the backseat passenger in a single vehicle accident on South River Road in North Platte.

The driver, the sister of Kylar’s friend sustained injuries. She was treated in North Platte and eventually released.

Kylar’s good friend and fishing buddy was in the passenger seat. He has suffered numerous serious injuries, and broken bones. He was transferred to Children's Hospital in Omaha, where he has undergone multiple surgeries. He is still hospitalized, and has now been transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln. Please keep him and their family in your prayers as he has a long recovery ahead of him.

Kylar sustained a broken pelvis (two areas), broken clavicle, had internal bleeding, bruised lungs, ruptured spleen, and a traumatic brain injury (TBI). He was flown to UNMC Omaha, where he had surgery to remove his spleen and stop bleeding. Since then he has been in a coma where they continue to monitor the pressure on his brain. He remains in critical condition.

His TBI is a called a Diffuse Axonal Injury. A DAI is the shearing (tearing) of the brain's long connecting nerve fibers (axons) that happens when the brain is injured as it shifts and rotates inside the skull.

Please join us in prayer and rally behind Kylar and his family as he heals and recovers. We have no idea how long or where this journey will take us, but we are so grateful to have you here to cheer him on.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Sarah Smith

Thank you to all the friends and family that have followed and supported  Kylar on this long healing journey.  October  1 was 2 months since the accident.  This kid is a fighter and a miracle.  We couldn't of got through this without all your thoughts, prayers, and donations.  On that note  this will probably be the last update. Kylar had his last day at Madonna yesterday.  The staff awarded him with the "Spirit Award" something that's usually given to adult patients on their recovery. Kylar finally reached his goal and "busted out". He made his escape and finally got to eat "good food." He will start out patient therapy this week to help continue with his brain healing. But every teenager needs privacy. So feel free to continue your prayers and sending healing vibes his way.  It's time for Kylar to start enjoying life again.

Thank you  thank you thank you!

We are so blessed.
