Kristen’s Story

Site created on August 27, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Kristen was diagnosed with breast cancer on Wednesday, August 14th 2019.  She discovered a lump in her breast months ago but had put off getting it checked out for a bit mostly due to her age and thinking it was not anything serious.  She scheduled an appointment to have it checked out which led to a multitude of tests including a biopsy.  The biopsy results showed cancer in the breast and it had spread to a lymph node in the same breast.  After further testing, PET scan results showed multiple cancer spots in her liver as well.  While this was not great news to receive, it is encouraging that the discovery of cancer in the liver did not prompt any changes to her previously prescribed treatment of chemotherapy and radiation.

She will be receiving 6 chemo treatments 3 weeks apart over the course of the next 4 months (finished her first treatment yesterday as I write this!).  Testing will be done to measure the effectiveness of the chemo after she has received her treatments.  At this point and as part of God's plan, next steps will hopefully include surgery to remove any remaining cancer followed by 6 weeks of radiation.  She will be receiving treatment in Louisiana and is planning to travel back to Colorado as often as possible as her health permits.

We have created this site in hopes to keep our family, friends and all who love Kristen’s big smile up to date with her journey.   So many wonderful people have already reached out to us to offer incredible amounts of support, prayers and good vibes.  We cannot thank you all enough.  It is hard to put into words the amount of love that we feel.

This journey will simply be another mountain to climb on our adventure of life together.  It is our firm belief that with a positive mindset and a strong (THE BEST!) support system, nothing can keep us from the top.  Thank you for cheering us on!

All our love,
Kristen and Mitch

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kristen Watkins

Last Monday I got the results of my latest CT scan. Just as a recap, the previous scan I had was in December, which showed amazing results from chemo but there were still a few very small spots in my liver. Well in this latest scan, they did not see those spots anymore!!!!!!!!!!! So the CT scan did not show any evidence of cancer! So amazing! I still don’t think that has totally sunk in for me.

I’m feeling fortunate that my cancer is one that researchers know so much about and that has so many treatment options. I will continue to get the targeted treatment I’ve been getting (which doesn’t really have side effects and allows me to live a pretty normal life), and will hope and pray that my scans in the future stay clear. I know good and well that just because the cancer doesn’t show up on a scan, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. But for now I’m going to take this win and enjoy it.

I just found out today is National Cancer Survivors Day, so it seemed like a fitting time to write up this post. I read that you are considered a cancer survivor beginning the day you are diagnosed. But I didn’t really feel like a cancer survivor until last Monday, and it is so beautiful. God is so good. And prayer is so powerful! So thank you to everyone that has prayed for my healing, and feel free to keep those prayers coming. 😁🙏🏼🙌🏼

Love,
Kristen
