Journal entry by Kira Hilden

Good morning and happy Friday!!  It’s been a bit slow around here so we thought we’d liven things up a bit.  We debated making a post but thought maybe you missed us a little

Dad is on a business trip and mom had promised my youngest, Teddy, a fishing date one day after school when the weather got warmer.  I dropped Teddy off with mom about 3:15pm yesterday for their adventure.  He could not contain his excitement, recently he has become obsessed with fishing.  They were going to grab some bait and head to the lake.

I brought Abby to an after school activity and headed home.  It’s very rare to have a quiet house, so I took advantage and turned on the music and started prepping dinner.  Maybe around 4:30 my phone rang, Mom Cell popped up on the screen. I assumed she was calling to tell me that they were having luck and were going to stay longer.  I was surprised the answer to my normal “hi mom” was instead “ummm mom.  Grandma was helping me and she got hooked and she’s bleeding and in a lot of pain and could you please come to lake Riley by the big dock?”

Now luckily I live maybe a half mile away so I was there in no time.  I ran to the dock and on one side is another man just fishing away and the other is mom in a chair hunched over and Teddy just sitting in front of her.  I walk up and realize that the leur was hooked in her jeans and her finger.  A way better option that I was picturing as Teddy didn’t say where she got hooked.  She asked me to try and pull it out so I tugged a little but quickly realized that the barb on the hook wasn’t going to allow me to do that without her screaming.  She was shaking a little and teddy couldn’t really help, so I went to the man and asked him to help, and, what do you know, he was a medic.  Fast forward to later last night and I asked both Teddy and mom why neither of them asked for help when it first happened and wasn’t deep.  Mom said she didn’t know and Teddy said that grandma told him not to ask him because he was a stranger.

He was very kind and helped me cut the hook out of mom’s jeans so we could wrap the leur and her hand in a towel.  We hopped into the car and headed to urgent care.  There was a 2-3 hour wait but I was telling the check in lady that she had cancer and was on blood thinners and she got us right back to a room.  They were able to numb her finger and get it out real quick!  Because of the barb, they thought they might need to push it all the way through, cut the barb, and then pull
it out, but luckily the doctor was able to
wiggle it free.

Mom was a TROOPER, and we may have been the only people there laughing as much as we did.  We laughed a lot.  Teddy changed his leur 4 times in that short amount of time and still caught no fish.  The doctor said we were a breath of fresh air and got a kick out of us laughing, a nice change of pace from the normal cough, sore throat etc.  Mom got an updated tetanus shot and left with some antibiotics, no stitches needed.

Hopefully you all got a little laugh out of this to start your weekend. Mom is doing great health wise.  She’s been working out and eating more and feeling pretty good.  We have an appointment next week with Dr. B but we expect it to be another boring one which is ok.  In the meantime, keep sending those prayers and love, and maybe a good recommendation fishing gloves 😉

Love,
Kira
