Kim’s Story

Site created on November 21, 2023

My name is Kim Martin and I was diagnosed with a very rare tumor type (inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor) in March 2022. Following several attempts to treat it via surgery, targeted therapy medication and radiation treatments, I continue my cancer journey with day to day hope. Today is December 25 and unfortunately I am spending the last few and next few days in the hospital receiving antibiotics for a sepsis infection. This is especially difficult for me because of all my years working in this very hospital as a baby nurse.
My family and I continue to receive great support from extended family, neighbors, coworkers, church groups and anonymous individuals.
I do not wish to call this a battle or a fight against cancer. It has unfortunately become my journey with cancer. Life has made decisions for me that I never would have made for myself. We try to live each day rather than wallow in the past or the what could have beens. With the support of faith, family and some stubbornness, I seek healing and more time with Lauren and my daughters and their family.

Journal entry by Lauren Martin

On Saturday we had a beautiful and meaningful service for Kim. People said it was a fitting tribute for her. It was half rainy and snowy. Perfect weather in my opinion. Now the next chapter begins as I try to figure out how I live without my best friend. My daughter Sierra is moving here from Baltimore and she will keep me company. My daughter Mariah and son in law Nick will return to Goshen, Indiana but we will all stay close. Thanks so much for all your support and prayers during this difficult time. Lauren
