Newest Update

Journal entry by Kim Smittant

Hi all,
A quick update that I am back on Xeloda at a reduced dosage which is treating me much better. The first day back on it was rough, but Tylenol and Ativan got me through the side effects. The last few days I haven’t had any headaches or nausea! Woo! I also started Keytruda on Monday which is a 30 minute infusion. No side effects from that!  Feeling glad to be back on schedule. Delays are very frustrating. Also my mental health is currently in a much better place than it’s been in a while. It’s very jarring as a cancer patient to finish each stage of treatment, you just have to wait and hope it doesn’t come back all while mourning the loss of my body as I used to know it, and dealing with lingering side effects. I say this not necessarily for sympathy, but to share that the fight isn’t ‘over’ when treatment is over, and it might be hard for cancer muggles to understand that someone can still struggle after active treatment. It’s really challenging to go from cancer consuming my life to being cancer-free. Some days are hard and other days I can get cancer out of my head. Luckily I have a great support system who listen to me and allow me to rest when I need to.
I may not have an update for a while since I’ll be on these treatments for 6 months, so I’m wishing you all a happy holidays!! Thanks for caring for me and making me feel so supported this year. I haven’t had the energy to thank everyone individually but hope to circle around to that soon.
