Kimberly’s Story

Site created on November 7, 2018

I never thought I would be writing a "story" for me to be shared to friends and family.  I never dreamed that I would be facing the road that I am facing! On August 27, 2018 I married the Love of my life, Danny, and life was great and was a fairy-tale come true! We had the world in our hands and were so excited to be starting our lives together.  Mid October came, and we boarded a cruise ship for our honeymoon, where life as we know it would change for us! The second day of our honeymoon, I fell gravely ill and in the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life.  I went to the ship medical clinic, where it was assumed I had a kidney stone; but, after days of extreme pain and barely able to walk I started to wonder what was really going on with me. I knew something was WRONG... When we got off the ship, Danny drove me straight to the hospital in our hometown, where they rushed me to a Cat Scan to only find there was no kidney stone at all; in fact, it was much worse, I had a 8 x 9 cm mass coming from my ovary to my colon.  To add fuel to the fire, there was also an infection from my colon leaking into the mass.

Fast forward a few days and a few doctors’ appointments and hospital overnights; I am seeing GYN Oncology who is saying they are "preparing for the worst but hoping for the best".  It is suspicious and looks like it is cancer as it is acting like cancer, but, we cannot know 100% until surgery and they can test it and we can stage it.  Surgery is approaching fast and will be around the beginning of December, it will be a LONG and complex surgery. As of right now it looks that I will have to have some of my colon re-sectioned along with removal of the only remaining ovary I have.  So, I will have a team of Colorectal surgeons and GYN oncology surgeons in the O.R. all together. I will be at UVA, and pray I am in good hands, so I can get back to my life with my husband and best friend!

We hope to have updates as I move forward with surgery and pre-surgery tests. Thank you everyone for all the prayers and sweet messages we have been receiving!

Journal entry by Kimberly Bishop

Okay so the doctor called me to talk about what happened during surgery!! So here it is!!

So when the first opened me up they could not find it even see my ovary. What they did find was where the mass had been crushing my colon, it had caused the colon to fold over and was stretched out to cover the ovary. So once the fixed and resized the colon and put it back to the area it should have been they got to the actual mass and ovary when the found that the mass was actually all over the ureter and the bottom of my kidney so the had to resize the ureter and I almost didn’t have a kidney! But they got it fixed and cleaned up. Then they scrapped my bladder and had to take out ample amounts of abdominal muscle and tissue to remove all the mass. They have sent the mass and the cyst to traditional more detailed pathology testing done! The results will be back next week! So they were able to get everything IF they find any malignancies in the cyst or mass then she said a few rounds of chemo would fix me up as she felt confident they got everything.. so she said she wanted to tell me when my head was clear enough to understand! And reminded me I am down for at least 6-8 weeks since so much was done!

I’m in good spirits just in pain and sleepy!!
