Just a little background to let you know how we got here… In early May, I made note of a rapidly growing “something” in my breast, which literally exploded in size in a matter of a week to ten days. Through a biopsy, we learned that I had a rare and aggressive, high-grade sarcoma… a cancer of the connective tissue that just so happened to form in my breast, although not an actual form of breast cancer. I had a mastectomy on June 1, achieving excellent margins, leaving us with a 50/50 chance that it would not return. Before I had time to heal from the surgery, I began to have extreme leg weakness, just as I had when the sarcoma was rapidly growing a month prior. Testing has now shown that the cancer has metastasized in the form of “innumerable solid nodules” on both of my lungs. We are not on the good side of the 50% at this point, as fighting this aggressive disease is made more challenging, because there is not a form of treatment known to be effective at eradicating it. In an attempt to slow it down, I will begin an intense chemotherapy regimen inpatient at UT Southwestern in Dallas on Monday, 8/14. I should be able to go home on Thursday, 8/17. The prayer is that my body can withstand the treatment and use it effectively to keep the sarcoma at bay for as long as possible.
That said, we are “good” in the sense that we are at peace and ready for the fight ahead! I know that God’s perfect plan will be made manifest in my life, and that of my family.
