Kiana’s Story

Site created on February 25, 2021

I thought we would make this page to keep everyone updated on what is going on with Kiana.  Kiana started getting sick on Friday (Feb) 19th. She had a bad sore throat and a fever, along with some other symptoms.  She went in for a strep test, which was negative.  She started feeling more sick as the weekend went on, so they went in to the emergency room. There they said that she was severely dehydrated, so she was there all night on IV fluids.  She had a high heart rate and low blood pressure.  After this ER visit they ended up going back home but she was still feeling worse as time went on, and her heart rate and blood pressure weren’t improving. Kara decided to bring her back to the ER on Wednesday.  They did some bloodwork and testing there and found that she has an infection. She had also started having breathing difficulties and issues with her heart.  The doctor there found that she is fighting sepsis due to the infection.  On Wednesday evening she was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Fargo. Kiana was sedated and put on a ventilator on Thursday morning.   After more testing on Thursday, they found the bacteria that is causing the infection.  The infection is in all of her organs. They do have antibiotics to fight this particular bacteria, so our hope is that we can start to get a handle on the infection. She also developed pneumonia in the last day or so, which they discovered here in Fargo. Please remember her in your prayers.  We will post with updates when we know more about what is going on.

Journal entry by Kara Haataja

"I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
of happy times and laughing times, and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun
of happy memories that I leave when life is done"

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of you who prayed for Kiana while she was ill, who were there with us physically or kept us in your thoughts and prayers on the day, 6 months ago, when we said goodbye to our sweet girl, and every day since then. Thank you to everyone who helped us financially, brought us meals or other gifts, who joined us on the day of her funeral service, who helped us with our house, yard and other day to day tasks that have been challenging in the midst of our grief, and everyone who remembered us in these last six months.

Love,
Kara and Aliah
