Newest Update

Journal entry by Kevin Goodan

Today marks 4 months since my broken back and Spinal Cord Injury. Since my last update I spent 3 more weeks as an outpatient at CRAIG in Englewood, Colorado and the latter week back in Washington State rehabilitating at St. Luke's in Spokane. At CRAIG I utilized a machine called NRN. This device consisted of a harness system that suspends a programmed amount of your body weight and can increase or decrease while operating. There were 4 therapists that helped with this system, 2 therapists would help make sure my knees and feet would line up correctly, 1 therapist would hold my hips correctly and help shift my weight from one side to the other, and another therapist would work the computer. In the beginning I would need to stimulate certain muscle groups to help active muscle groups, but as time went on I was able to hold the majority of the body weight without any electrodes. In addition, I had AFO orthotics made to help support my calves and ankles while assistive walking with arm crutches and/or a walker. (I can only walk about 500 feet before taking a long break). My PT at CRAIG made an extensive at home work-out plan with stretches and strengthening exercises that I continue to do daily. Once arriving in Washington, I have added to my workout plan by going to the YMCA to utilize equipment such as a NuStep, a row-machine and a leg press to help strengthen my legs further. I have also been climbing up and down the stairs with the orthotics to help strengthen my legs as well. Once I feel strong enough with my back I will add an adaptive CrossFit regiment to help strengthen my shoulders and compensate for pushing forward in my wheelchair the majority of the day. Also, I am hoping to build a set of parallel bars so that I can walk without assistance and get better with my proprioception (knowing where my legs/feet are without looking). My recover continues to be a marathon. I want to thank everyone who has supported me through this tough time so far. The GoFundMe contributions are so incredibly appreciated and have helped to alleviate the some of the stress of medical bills and PT. I currently only have 5 more PT sessions that will be covered by insurance then I will be funding the rest of my recovery out of my own pocket. Any further outreach and sharing of the GoFundMe would be greatly appreciated, anything during this hard time will help tremendously. Thank you all so much! Nothing but love!
