Kevin’s Story

Site created on July 6, 2022

On July 3, 2022 at about 4pm at Glendo Reservoir, Kevin jumped into the water off the beach to cool off after playing a game of volleyball, and impacted his head on the shallow and sandy lake bottom. He was immediately taken to the Douglas hospital due to losing complete lack of mobility and feeling upon impact. Where it was determined that he had broken his C5 vertebrae, as well as fractured the C4 vertebrae in his neck. At this time, he was flown to the UCHealth Center in Loveland, CO. Upon arrival, he was admitted to the surgical ICU. After receiving MRI results, it was determined that his spinal cord had incurred damage but did not appear to be torn. However, the broken C5 vertebrae was putting  pressure on the spinal cord and had created a hemorrhage. It was determined that a corpectomy surgery would be the best next move to fix and stabilize the fracture. Kevin was positive before his surgery as he was already experiencing some slight returning movements in his arms and wrists, as well as weak feeling in his toes, mid calf areas, and from the chest up.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Shelly Larson

Recap: Kevin was injured 7/3, in ICU until 7/28, transferred to Craig Rehab Hospital as inpatient until 10/20. Has been an outpatient four days per week and home in Lusk 3 days per week since then. His outpatient therapy will end about 12/22. By then his new accessible house in Casper will be ready to move into! He hopes to start back to work soon thereafter. Thank God for all the help he's received from Craig Rehab, friends and family and the support and encouragement from you all.  Until year end, please send your cards, notes and support to my address: PO Box 864, Lusk WY 82225

Today he drove a Craig Hospital van equipped with assistive devices all around Englewood! I'm amazed how quick he picked this up.  Once he's able to have a vehicle can be modified for these controls he'll be driving in Wyoming too...after Denver  that won't seem like much😁

We've loved having Kevin and his friends here when he's home from Denver but he is so ready to get back to Casper to his own place. Craig, Brittanny and Kevin stayed in his "old" house this weekend beginning to work on packing and organizing. Also, they went to Kia and Cam's for a Christmas party! Cam built a ramp for the occasion...such great friends! See the pics attached 😀  I don't know where the sweater came from! Carly definitely Trumps Kevin's look.

Merry Christmas!
