Journal

It's been a while since I've posted any updates, but rest assured, Kevin is progressing nicely. He can now propel himself in the wheelchair using his left hand and left leg, and easily pivots and turns in tight spaces. On Tuesday, we returned to Spaulding Rehab Hospital for a post-discharge visit. Kevin seemed to feel very much at home among so many others in wheelchairs and easily navigated without help through hallways and offices and even to the Constitution Cafe, where I spent many hours while he was a patient there (the food is actually pretty good!). He seemed very comfortable as he perused the offerings, picking out a chocolate chip cookie and a bag of potato chips along the way and eyeing a piece of pizza (taking a little break from his super-healthy diet at the German Centre!). I felt as though it was a first outing since his stroke and it gave me a taste of what it might be like for us going forward. He is going to be coming home this week, which will present a whole new host of challenges, but I have to say, I'm so grateful for how things have gone so far. I was so afraid of losing him, but he's back, still Kevin, still brilliant, still undefeated and determined to live life to the fullest. What an amazing person! I know he's going to figure out how to play the flute one-handed, and maybe even golf. If anyone can, he can. His vision continues to be a challenge as far as reading goes, but we're addressing that in August when we visit the low-vision clinic at the VA. His spirit is undaunted; he even asked me this week to check the state budget to make sure the Joiner Center was being funded. Being with him is a lesson in persistence and perseverance (not so much patience, though!). Love to you all, I hope you will come visit once Kevin is back home.
