Kent’s Story

Site created on August 9, 2022

I am not even sure where to begin with making a post like this.

For those of you who haven't heard, Kent was in a motorcycle accident on August 5th. He was flown to St. Cloud in a helicopter as his injuries were extensive. In true Kent fashion, he joked to the pilot that he wished he could at least 'sit up and see the view'. When he got there, we learned that he has a very badly broken right femur and ankle, and left wrist. His right wrist is slightly broken and his shoulder blade fractured. We can praise God that he was wearing his helmet as he has no injuries to his head. He also has no internal injuries. Kent is with us today, bones will heal.

He had surgery that day and they were able to stabilize his right leg and left wrist. The swelling was too high to really start on the fixing.
He had a 'good' first night and into the weekend he has been able to keep his spirits up. We learned this morning though that his stay there would be a lengthy one, as long as 2 months. His right arm will take a few weeks to heal, his left arm a few months and they said that his right leg will be a long healing journey. He will have surgery on his left wrist this week and his ankle likely next week. And from there likely a few more surgeries.

Those of you who know Kent, know how active he is. He loves playing any type of sport and especially with his kids. They are missing him terribly at home right now.

I cannot even begin to say how overwhelming this all is. The injuries and that this happened for one, but also the amount of love and support that we have all received. I never thought I'd be on the receiving end of something like this, but I am so thankful for all of you who have prayed, reached out, brought meals and signed up for the meal train, offered to watch our kids, offer to help on anything with our house, etc. I am blown away.
I am still trying to catch up on messages. I am not sure that I will be able to answer them all, or if I do, it could be a little ways down the road. Please know that I see all of them and I appreciate them more than anyone can know.

Prayer requests:
Please pray for Kent's spirits to remain high. This will be immensely important. Pray for the surgeons to come up with a good plan for surgery and for healing. Pray for the kiddos, this is so far out of normal life for us. Pray for the nurses who are taking wonderful care of him daily. Pray for safe travels for those of us who are making daily trips to St. Cloud and back. Pray for life balance as I attempt to run around after three very energetic children.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kelcie Underland

This has been one heck of a year... probably the hardest one I've ever endured in my life if I am being really honest.  I don't think Kent would disagree with that either,  and he's had the much harder road. It's only by the grace of God, His healing power, and strength that we have made it to where we are today.

Here is where life is sitting currently: mid July, Kent had a doctor appointment with his new doctor in the Twin Cities. His other doctor moved far enough away that we had to find a new one to continue his care/treatment. He had been walking with a cane and wearing a knee brace up until that visit. When we met with the new doctor he advised that he'd like him to stop using both of those things (I know, we were shocked as well..!) and to try and work up to some light activity, as well as resuming PT sessions. He does still have about 2 inches of the front of his femur bone that have not grown back yet. The doctor is hoping that by resuming some activity, it will encourage more bone growth. We are still not certain if another surgery lies ahead or not, as it all depends on how the bone continues to heal/grow. The end goal is still to be able to play basketball and to be able to resume all physical activities, including keeping up with our three kiddos.

Recently, Kent has been able to play a round of golf, go to the driving range with Jake, go swimming, exercise (lightly) and has been able to go back on site for a work trip with his job. These are all things that he hasn't been able to do in this past year.

We want to again thank everyone for all of the kind encouragement, cards, gifts,  meals, help, and prayers. It's been incredibly humbling to receive so much love and support over this past year!!

Hebrews 6:10: “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”

God bless ❤️
