Kenna’s Story

Site created on September 27, 2021

Welcome to Kenna's CaringBridge website. As you may already know, we found out at 27 weeks pregnant that our sweet Kenna has a very rare heart defect called Truncus Arteriosus. This means that the main artery in her heart should have split into two early on in pregnancy, but it never did. There is no known cause for the condition, and she will have surgery shortly after being born (within two weeks, then repeatedly as she grows throughout life) to add an artificial conduit to her heart. She will most likely spend 4-6 additional weeks in the hospital recovering.

We will post updates of her progress on this site when we have something to share. Thank you for joining us on Kenna's journey! First step, meeting her- and we cannot wait!

Journal entry by Steve Nystrom

Hi!
Kenna had a cardiology appointment today, and we got fantastic news!! Kenna is still EFFUSION FREE and her heart is functioning well. Kenna’s cardiologist said she is doing great and she doesn’t need to come back for two months! If that appointment goes well, Kenna will only need checkups every six months.
Kenna has continued to eat more and more since getting back from the hospital. Her pediatrician believes she’s about to take off and make up for some lost growing time.
This kind of feels like the end of the first chapter of our heart journey with Kenna. We won’t be posting much on here anymore, but the cute Kenna pics will still show up on Facebook. We have said it before, but we appreciate you all more than can be put into words. Thank you so much for being a part of Kenna’s journey to conquer CHD!

Love,
Kenna, Cassie, and Steve
