Kendyl’s Story

Site created on July 25, 2023

❤️Strong Hearted ❤️
Kendyl was born with several heart defects that have been carefully followed the past 11 years by many Cardiologists. We have finally reached surgery day! She is undergoing an aortic root repair with a Dacron sleeve to reinforce, or if necessary, replace her dilating aorta to prevent a future aneurysm. Please pray for all of us. Stay tuned for updates.

Journal entry by Christine Belcher

Rest and recovery at home is going well. Kendyl has had two post-op appointments this past week. She continues to heal! Yesterdays appointment had some high points and some low points. Her echocardiogram was quite painful and she writhed in pain on the table as the tech slid the wand around her chest and neck but she was able to let the tech do her job so the surgeon could see great pictures. She is obviously quite protective of the area, I can’t blame her for crying! The high point of the appointment was the removal of the surgical tape that covered up her sternum and neck incisions. She is so much more comfortable today, standing taller, and no longer lifting her shirt off her chest constantly to keep it from touching her chest. She took her last dose of antibiotic today and is really celebrating the end to that nasty 20 ml she’s been met with every morning! She’s now had two at home showers and still needs me to shower her because she isn’t supposed to lift her arms above her chest. We took our first walk around the block this evening and she completed it without complaint! She has been joining friends and family poolside and is allowed to receive splashes but can’t submerge herself. We’ve been spoiled by so many friends and family feeding us, loving on us, and visiting us. The well wishes, cards, cookies, and gifts continue to bring Kendyl  many smiles. Thank you for all the love! Kendyl has had the most optimistic outlook this past 7 or 8 months as appointments and tests bombarded her schedule, she worked up to the surgery with far less anxiety and more bravery than I would have ever imagined. She is such a badass! ❤️
