The roller coaster continues, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I am sure it is not an oncoming train, but who knows! We are just going to assume that it is the end. After two more weeks of chemo, this part of my story is complete. Every week has had its ups and downs, but for the most part, I feel pretty good. My biggest complaint is being tired. I have had a few side effects from chemo besides hair loss (Jeremy jokes that when we are together, it looks like we joined a cult but assures everyone we have not!). He is so stinking sweet and funny!
A fun (and interesting) side effect is the color of my eyes is changing. I asked my nurses and the PA, and neither of them had heard of this, so the nurse in me did some research and found that less than 1% will have eye color change! Yeah me! My eyes have gone from dark brown to grey/green. My grandfather and uncle both had grey eyes, and my dad has green eyes, so I guess I just wanted to be a little more like them.
A not-as-pleasant side effect has been a pulling feeling on the back of my head. We are thinking that it is just neuropathy from the chemo, but we are doing an MRI tomorrow just to double-check. It is a strange feeling like someone is pulling my head down, and then a few moments later, both ears get very warm. Again, strange, and nothing in the research!
I am back to work four days a week and love it. I know I have said it many times, but each of my students brings joy and fills my cup. As we are wrapping up the spring semester, there have been times that I wonder why I do what I do, and then I am reminded by kind words from a student.
The ride continues: two more weeks of chemo and three more months of Herceptin. Sometime in May (hopefully), I will have my final reconstruction surgery, and we can step off of this roller coaster for good. Thank you all for being on this ride with me! If you feel a tug on your hand, it’s just me saying thank you!
