Hello to our wonderful family here on Kenny’s Caring Bridge. We wanted to take a quick moment to update everyone. Some may know, but for those who don’t, Dad wished to have his body donated to science upon his passing. As it turns out, an amazing non-profit called Genesis (a part of MERI- the Medical Education and Research Institute) is located right here in Memphis, across the street from the hospital where Dad was treated for his stroke. They accept whole body donations from 19 neighboring states. For more on Genesis and all it encompasses, please visit meri.org.

Our Dad, husband, friend, Papa, and email-loving “Memphis Ken” ended up being a very valuable asset to Genesis’ whole body donation program. We always knew his body would be used and then cremated within a year. Last week Mom received a beautifully written 3 page letter sharing the details of all the ways Kenny’s body helped teams of doctors all over the world. Given his many ailments and afflictions the second half of his life, Genesis shared with us just how vital a role he played in providing others with a greater chance for a better life as he was the vessel for so many medical training procedures.  He would have loved knowing this and would be so proud that even in death, he served humanity in this way.  His legacy is one that should always be remembered as a sacred blessing.

Mom, Melanie and I knew that at the end of the program, Dad’s ashes would be returned to us. Today was the day we were reunited with our Kenny. We went on to spend the day doing things he would have LOVED! This started with Cobb salads and a cheeseburger at the Majestic Grille (think Cheesecake Factory meets Westlake Joe’s). Then the 7 of us enjoyed fourth row seats at the opening day of the Redbirds, the minor league team for the St. Louis Cardinals. The past 7 months, we have felt Dad's presence every time we saw a cardinal, so this felt extra special. In addition to his favorite ball game treats- hot dogs and popcorn in a souvenir tub- the frozen Snickers ice cream bar was the perfect nod to our guy as that was his favorite candy bar, especially the king size!

We hope you all keep your fond memories of Ken close. The love and support we have received from you all provide us with comfort, strength and love!

As for another of Dad’s passions, March Madness, Mike was bequeathed Dad’s spot in Bob Mendelsohn’s pool and is still very much alive with two teams remaining!

New photos will be posted commemorating our day. Wishing those who celebrate a Happy Easter & lots of love to all near and far!
