Kelly’s Story

Site created on January 6, 2010

Thank you for coming to this site to support Kelly, Alan, John and Eli during this new and challenging time in their lives.  If you don't all ready know, on Tuesday, November 10 2009 Kelly was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  This site has been set up to communicate with friends and family through her journey.

It is hard for me to determine when "my story" begins. I guess I will start with the very first time I felt the lump. I was either pregnant with Eli our second boy, or I was nursing. I remember Alan and I felt the lump and figured it was a clogged milk duct or somthing to do with the hormones of pregnancy. I immediately got pregnant following 14 months of nursing Eli, and so I rarely noticed the lump and ignored it. After the two misscarriages in Sept08 & Feb09, I still never thought it was significant and seemed to come and go. In Oct of 09 Alan and I were wanting to try for another child but I noticed the lump was still there. We decided to have it checked out "just to be safe"

The next few days involved numberous apts of ultrasounds and biopsies, with a final apt with the radiologist that confirmed both ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive ductal carcinoma.  My parents live in Rochester MN and have a wonderful friend who is a surgical oncologist at the Mayo Clinic. He was so very gracious and offered to help us meet with anyone we needed to along this journey we had begun.   After lots of prayer Alan and I left the boys with family and friends here and flew out to the Mayo clinic.  Although the 10 days we were there was very much a nightmare, we felt so overwhelmed with blessings from staff there.  Although it was so difficult to be away from our sweet boys, we felt so loved and cared for by my parents and those at home taking care of our boys.  Sometimes, even as a grown women, you just need your mom and dad and that is what I needed.  On Thursday Nov 19th, we chose to have a lumpectomy. The surgery went very well, and although they had to go back several times to get clear margins, they were able to get them.  Three days later we were notified that the lymph nodes appeared negative.  I will never forget the grace I felt from the Lord at that moment.  For now we are learning and considering our treatment options.  Prayers for this very important decision making time are appreciated.
