At the end of March, Kellen came down with a seemingly routine cold/flu like illness. He wasn’t recovering, but all labs/imaging were normal until suddenly they didn’t and he became paralyzed from his waist down with very minimal function to his upper body. He is currently receiving care in a pediatric intensive care unit and was diagnosed with a severe case of a rare condition called acute flaccid myelitis (AFM.) While his prognosis is unknown, he will have a long journey of rehabilitation to come.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Heather Knutson

A quick note to say that we are trying to find the time to get an update on the system. We hope to have one up soon. In short - we are home, and Kellen, who is beating all of the odds, has moved to out-patient therapy. Its another new norm to learn for all of us and is also keeping us very busy.

Kellen has given us permission to share some of his journey via photos that we didn't previously share. I will post to the gallery some photos of his time before Children's Hospital, time at Children's, time at Gillette, and his time so far since he's been home. This kid is beyond amazing and keeps grinding and making improvements daily. Each photo is dated and some are explained within the caption of the photo.
