Kay’s Story

Site created on October 16, 2023

On Wednesday, October 11th, Kay was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. She has a rare form called Leiomyosarcoma, or LMS. This cancer forms in the smooth muscles of the body, and she is currently battling a large tumor in her abdomen that is roughly 15 cm in diameter with lesions on the lungs and another near her spinal cord. We are working with a cancer care team at the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center with a group of great healthcare providers (alongside Kay and Scott’s RN sisters, Lek and Beth, that we are so grateful to have within our familial support system at home).

Throughout all of this, we are really grateful that we will have our care-team very local to us. While our primary oncologist and nurse are located 30 minutes south of us at the U of M, all the chemo care that Kay needs is able to be completed at the U of M Fairview Wyoming location, which is less than a 10 minute drive from our home in Forest Lake.

We are still at the beginning stages of our journey and we will do our best to keep you updated. We ask that you keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. We are truly hoping, manifesting, and praying for a miracle.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Angie Dimitrov

Hello everyone! We wanted to put out a brief update about the fundraiser we recently launched as well as some updates about Kay's state of health.

Last week we started the “Kay’s Miracle” fundraiser, and from over 50 donors thus far, we have raised $3,661 via GoFundMe and $300 from physical check/cash donations. This has totaled $3,961, putting us a little over 25% of the way to our $15,000 goal for this year!  On behalf of our entire family, we want to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported us with our fundraiser. We are overwhelmed with the love, support, and generosity we’ve been surrounded by throughout this journey, but especially so during this past week. We are so touched by everyone’s kindness and remain incredibly grateful for the role everyone has played in helping us afford the care that Kay deserves.

In case you haven’t donated and would like to, the link can either be found here, on the “Ways to Help” tab on this page, or directly on www.GoFundMe.com by searching “Kay’s Miracle”.  And just as a reminder, the “Donate to CaringBridge” icon on our page/on the emails from CaringBridge does NOT go towards our fundraiser/family, the only online donations we receive are from our GoFundMe link.

As for Kay's health, this week she started and finished her 4th round of chemo, and this time around, she was hit pretty hard with fatigue, lack of energy, and a lingering mental fog (or as we’ve been calling it, “chemo brain”). Long naps during the day have been very necessary for her, but among all the possible side effects of chemo, we know this is on the lighter end of symptoms, and we remain grateful for it. Highlights for Kay have been taking our dog Molly to the dog park with Scott, working from home and visiting her offices, and being able to cook her favorite meals for herself/the family when she can.

Looking forward, we are awaiting Kay’s second CT scan later this month which will give us an updated look as to how the chemo has affected the tumors in her body over these past 2 rounds. We have our fingers crossed that we receive news similar to her first scan in that the tumors have remained under control by staying the same in size and decreasing in density. We continue to ask for your thoughts and prayers for our beloved Kay, and we thank you all for taking the time to read our journal entries to stay up to date with our journey.
