Kaye’s Story

Site created on June 3, 2018

Mom was driving to a dental appointment on May 24th when she went into Cardiac Arrest.  Mom would not be here without the grace of God and the quick action of a few brave good samaritans who recognized what was happening and extracted her from the car and preformed CPR for nearly 25 minutes until the paramedics arrived. After being defibrillated she was transported to Piedmont Hospital where she was admitted under a worst case  senerio to the CCU where they used a cutting edge 48 hour  procedure called Hydro Hypothermia Therapy. They cooled her body temp to 33°C for 24 hours to allow her body and most importantly her brain to heal properly and mitigate damage. During the next 72 hours we were told phrases like “1 out of 10 odds” and “vegetative state.” Every day mom slowly showed signs of progress, but it was not until the neurologist did some simple moter reaction tests that we knew she was going to be back with us, but it was going to be a long journey.  Every hour after that Mom grew stronger and stronger. It was an hour by hour senerio. She was taken off the ventilator by the next Wednesday but it was not until June 4th that we knew Mom was back just like before. God has been very good to her and to us, her family. We still have a long way to go with rehabilitation, but she is ready to get healthy and back home. We know that after she gets stronger she will receive a pacemaker and a defibrillator implant in her chest just incase it hapens again. We created this page so that you can follow along and track Mom’s progress until she gets home and you can send your love her way! Thank you for all of your prayers and unwavering support.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Grady Luckey

Sorry It’s been a while since my last update. I needed the shock to wear off and I didn’t want to get bogged down in minor updates. Yesterday marks one month since Mom’s “incident” and she has come such a LONG WAY! She is now able to walk around her floor without any help or support and she has naturally transitioned into the much needed entertainment for most of the residence in the Breeman Home. When she is not out socializing after her exercises, the other residents will knock on her door and peep in just to look at all the flowers. She has such great friends that have helped her and us survive throughout this whole ordeal. Last week she was scoring at 80% of her level and she has progressed further since then. We are hoping for her to get released soon, we just want to make sure she is ready for the big transition of living back at home. If she is released, we are thinking it will be this Thursday. I will let y’all know when that happens. We are so very grateful for all of your constant thoughts and prayers. They worked and we are so fortunate to have Mom with us. Thank you!
