While visiting MN to celebrate her grandpas 90th birthday Kaydee experienced tremendous knee and leg pain. Her parents took her to the ER on July 29, 2018 .  While she had been experiencing pain since April, at this point it had become intolerable and as an all star volleyball player they knew the level of pain Kaydee was experiencing was something out of the ordinary.  She had several tests while there and the X-ray showed a large tumor growing in her right femur.  A decision was made to have an MRI at the ER even though one was scheduled back in CO upon their return from vacation.  The MRI revealed a preliminary diagnosis of Ewing's Sarcoma, an extremely rare pediatric bone cancer that most often occurs in children and teens.  Upon return to CO on July 31, 2018 she had additional testing including a biopsy and bone scan that confirmed the diagnosis on August 1, 2018.  While the news of her diagnosis was difficult to comprehend, the tests that came the following week revealed a very positive result! The cancer has not spread to anywhere else in the body, therefore giving Kaydee a very positive prognosis. However, the treatment path she will endure is one of the most difficult chemotherapy regimens and a very difficult surgery to remove the cancerous tumor and stabilize the bone.

Kaydee made the brave decision to pursue fertility preservation steps in the event the treatment affects her ability to have children.  She will endure 12 days of fertility injections and an egg retrieval procedure so she can harvest her eggs.   After the fertility preservation and egg retrieval Kaydee will begin chemotherapy treatment on August 29, 2018 at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children (RMHC). She has a wonderful doctor, Dr. Brad Ball, who is one of four fabulous doctors at the Rocky Mountain Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Practice.  Her treatment will involve 6 cycles (approximately 14 weeks) of chemotherapy, followed by surgery to remove the tumor and stabilize the femur.  Then she will endure another 11 cycles (approximately 6 months) of chemotherapy to kill the cancer.  Her treatment regimen will mostly require her to be inpatient at RMHC due to the aggressiveness of the chemo drugs she will be treated with and the side affects that will come with them.  This is especially difficult for her given this is her Senior year at Wheat Ridge High School and the 9 months of treatment ahead will take up most of that year.  However, she remains positive and strong knowing that once she conquers this 9 month journey she will be ready to move forward into her college years with a new perspective on life!

Obituary for Kaydee Brielle Koch - https://www.heflebowerfuneralservices.com/obituaries/Kaydee-Koch/#!/Obituary

Kaydee Brielle Koch, age 20, passed away peacefully at her home in Wheat Ridge, Colorado surrounded by her loving family on Friday, May 13th, 2022. She was born on July 18th, 2001, at Rose Medical Center, to Paul and Lenee Koch. Kaydee was a 2019 graduate of Wheat Ridge High School and was attending Gonzaga University with aspirations of becoming a Physician Assistant (PA) in pediatric oncology.

Kaydee was the rock of her family, especially her two younger brothers whom she loved beyond measure. Travel was a passion for Kaydee, especially to Mexico and South America where she could utilize her bilingual skills. Kaydee was an athlete and played many sports growing up including, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and ultimately chose competitive volleyball as her passion. She enjoyed hanging out with friends and watching movies in her free time. Some of her favorite things in life were the TV show Friends, her dog Rio, the Colorado Avalanche Hockey Team, and a love for being on the water whether it was a lake, river, or ocean.

Kaydee’s battle with pediatric bone cancer lasted 4 years. Her strength and positivity during the darkest of times was a testament to her bravery. Even as she endured chemo, radiation, surgeries, bone marrow biopsies, a stem cell transplant, blood and platelet transfusions, and a clinical trial she did it all with a beautiful smile and a witty sense of humor.

Everyone who knew Kaydee realized she was special. She was loved enormously in her short life and that love will carry us on until we see her again.

Kaydee is survived by her parents, Paul, and Lenee; her brothers Logan and Ryan; her maternal grandmother and her paternal grandparents; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial service for Kaydee will be held at the University of Denver, Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday June 12th, 2022.
