Journal entry by Jolene Lew

We are thrilled to share the news Katie was discharged from Courage Kenny yesterday and is now home in her apartment!

Katie's recovery is a miracle to us, knowing how far she's come in just 7 weeks. Outpatient therapy at Courage Kenny will continue for months, but we are so grateful for this huge milestone. And she is overjoyed to be HOME!

Currently her family and a few close friends are providing the recommended supervision as she acclimates back into her daily life. She's establishing a new normal for what she needs today and that will evolve as her brain continues to heal in the months ahead. The Avidor (apartment) community gave a warm welcome home and many have offered support to help reemerge her into using all the great benefits within the facility (yoga, book club, inspiration group, tai chi, knitting club,  game and puzzle groups and more!) Which is great since she does not drive. Mom will have many ways to enjoy her days at home within this environment, and with the help of the wonderful people that live here.

An important thing we were told when taking Mom home is to help protect her from overstimulation. As with any brain injury/stroke, this is a critical piece of healing. Many of you reading this post will want to call or text or set up a time to visit, you probably won't get a response right away. She loves to read all the cards, texts and voicemails, but she's not quite ready for most visitors. She's intentionally protecting her energy for the things she needs to do to keep progressing forward.

Within the next few weeks, we will share more about her wishes for visitors, and other ways to show your support like a ride to therapy or providing a healthy meal. This group is an amazing village and there will be many ways in the future to help Katie continue on her journey of recovery ❤️ And help us kids.

Happy Easter, and much love and gratitude for today!
