Journal entry by Kathy Undeland

Home is nice. Sleep is so much better-it’s uninterrupted. And I nap uninterrupted, too, for the most part, and I needed 4 of them yesterday!

Walking and moving will continue to be a challenge for a while.. Everything is still swollen from the 40+ pounds of fluid, and the sciatica/piriformis/SI Joint pain will continue throughout the treatment, until the infection is gone, gone, gone. I “wore” shoes today (slip-ons normally a little big just barely got onto the feet)  to go to the clinic and get my PICC line extensions and dressing changed.

Staph infections often have a portal to the blood—a rash, an abscess, something on the skin to signal where the infection came from. Unfortunately, I have no such items and my skin is fine. Some of the testing that first week of being in the hospital was trying to pinpoint and find a cause within my body. With no cause, they chose the best/strongest antibiotic and then went from there. It has been baffling and left the doctors scratching their heads a few times. Also having no cause means I will need the full course of antibiotics and will be self-administering doses 3 times daily through my PICC line, until the end of July.

Physical Therapy starts Mon, July 11th.
