UPDATED CARING BRIDGE March 13, 2023

10. Years. Later. (Said in my best SpongeBob narrator voice…)
Well. Here we are again. At mom’s side in the ICU. This time in Ft Wayne and not Indianapolis. This time for a fall, and has nothing to do with her lungs or transplant.

To be continued….

Kathy (mom) has battled COPD for many years. She was on a double lung transplant list for about four years when finally, a set was available for her. Her transplant took place on February 24, 2008. She was a brand new person! Her grand kids got to know the Mamaw that was always took sick to play or stay overnight with. We got our mom back! most importantly, Dad got his wife back. Mom has four daughters: Sonya (Randy), Kim (Charlie), Tommi (James), and Krissi; and twelve grandchildren: Tyler, Victoria, Taryn, Gavin, Graham, Grayson, Mya, TJ, AJ, Dominick, Triston, and Gracie. (update 9/20/17 - we've added ANOTHER grandbaby to the list! Grayleigh Jane Askins was born on August 16, 2016!)

In the fall of 2012, mom started feeling poorly. Her breathing troubles seemed to reappear. She had a virus that kicked her immune system into high gear to fight the virus. This then caused her immune system to attack her transplanted lungs. Over the last several months, she has been battling rejection. To test for rejection, they perform a routine test called a bronchoscopy. During this procedure on Monday February 11th, 2013, mom's lung collapsed and her carbon dioxide (co2) levels went very high. She didn't wake up after the procedure, due to the high levels of co2. They inserted a chest tube and took her emergently to ICU and put her on the vent.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kim Askins

What a morning! It’s been a flurry of activity surrounding mom. She’s being released from the hospital to Brookview Nursing Home for rehab!

One step closer to home!

We are still asking that  visitors are limited.  She’s extremely frail and cannot fight infections easily.

Thanks again for all of the prayers and support. We appreciate them so much!
