Journal

Well it’s been a hot minute since I’ve updated my journey. So my maintenance chemo has been moving smoothly with minimal side effects (dry mouth, fatigue, and stay out of sun). However, in February I started having severe back spasms. After an ER visit, it was discovered that my vertebrae  T11 and T 12 were fractured. The orthopedic doctor put me in a back brace, gave me meds, and ordered 6 weeks of PT hoping the fractures would heal on their own. Well, the vertebrae didn’t heal so I had Kyphoplasty (cement in vertebrae) done on them. After a week of recovery, I landed back in ER to discover another fractured vertebrae L3. This time Kyphoplasty was done immediately to repair it!  I was feeling pretty good and walking pretty good which last for a week! On July 4th, all heck broke out in my back. Jeff got me to the hospital ER just in time because the pain level from 1-10 was at 1,000! I really thought I was being tortured! It was horrible! Come to find out, I had 4 more vertebrae fractures (L1, L2, L4, and T9). I was immediately admitted to hospital with Kyphoplasty to heal the new fractures the next day. I spent 8 days recovering in a beautiful room overlooking the Beaufort River ( Thanks to Chip Steele)- they say it’s the best room in the hospital! I was then moved to another floor of the hospital to receive PT and OT and to manage the pain medicine. So after 13 days in Beaufort Memorial Hospital, I got to come home. The doctors and the nurses were awesome!! They are not for sure why these fractures happened but speculate that the chemo has sparked my body into osteoporosis. I now inject myself with a bone strengthening drug everyday and take Caltrate & vitamin D. I’m walking with a walker right now and managing pain with some meds. I literally cannot do much- no lifting, bending, or twisting for 6-8 weeks but probably longer for me because I’m on chemo! Molly was able to be with me the whole time (working remotely) which was a God send! I have chemo this coming week in Charleston and hope the ride up will go smoothly. My sister is coming into town (from Ohio) for 2 weeks to help me and my mom will be here next week as well. Thank you for all the prayers, texts, cards, flowers, and visits from my friends. My goal is to be moving around good enough to party at Molly’s wedding in October. Keep the prayers coming- God is good, all the time!! ❤️❤️
