Journal

In December of 2018, one day after her birthday, my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer that has metastasized to her bones and liver, after she went for what we thought was treatment for bursitis in her hip. Turns out, it was a tumor that had caused a fracture in her hip bone. After surgery to remove the tumor and put a pin in to stabilize, we began to talk prognosis and treatment options. We were told she would need to start chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy, and that with that she had a projected 12-18 months. We were all obviously devastated to hear the news, so after a short family trip at my mom's request, we came back, began treatment and decided we will fight this with all we have.

As of February 2, 2019, we have completed 2 rounds of chemotherapy.  She is experiencing minimal side effects which are mild, and we're blessed and thankful for that.  Other than fatigue, some nausea, and hair loss, she is doing great.  On Feb. 1, we went to the American Cancer Society and got her a wig that she loves, and some hats for days where it's cold or she just doesn't feel up to wearing the wig.  We're remaining hopeful that she continues to do as well as she has, despite a minor setback of needing IV fluids and antibiotics through a trip to the ER.

For the time, the plan is to do at least 2 more rounds of chemo, and then take scans and evaluate how she's feeling and responding to treatment, and after that the her oncologist will decide whether we do an additional 2 rounds of chemo or reevaluate options.

As always, we are grateful to all for their calls, messages of support, and love and prayers through all of this.
