Kata’s Story

Site created on December 22, 2020

Friends and Family. As most of you know, Kata has been fighting a battle with inflammatory breast cancer for the past three years. She had a single mastectomy and underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation in 2018. Earlier this year after suffering debilitating headaches, doctors found a 4.8 cm tumor in her cerebellum which was removed.

Recently, Kata has been unable to keep food down since the 5th and she then started having trouble walking. At the advice of her oncologist I took her to the ER last week so they could run tests and scans, which revealed metastasis in the meninges of her skull. Essentially the cancer has moved to her cerebrospinal fluid. It's called Leptomeningeal Disease, and it's not curable, barely treatable, and has a dismal prognosis. We were concerned that she had this a few months ago but all 4 spinal taps she had came back inconclusive and she seemed to be feeling better. At this point it has been confirmed.

The doctors started her on radiation yesterday (the 21st) and will probably do 5-10 rounds before making a decision on the next course of treatment. They're trying to manage her symptoms at this point. Letting people know is difficult, but I really wanted to share with everyone. I will try to keep updates on this thread.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Valerie Walters

It has been 2 weeks since my last update. I have been making space for the family to get settled into their new routines, and in an effort protect their family time, I have not reached out for updates at the frequency I had been. I did get the chance to talk to Joe this afternoon though. He reports that Kata is getting stronger. She has more of an appetite and is needing less tube feeds. She is getting chemo 2x per week in port on her head and 1x every 3 weeks in the port on her chest. The side effects are minimal and mostly show up as fatigue. They have been staying very busy with multiple appointments each week. She has an MRI scheduled for next week that will determine how the chemo is working. I also can't forget that Kata had a birthday last week!! She was given a video montage made by friends and family and had a bunch of friends drop by to serenade her with signs and instruments. And at Kata's request they celebrated with multiple varieties of pie. Please continue to keep Kata and her beautiful family in your thoughts. I will write another update in the next week or so.
