Karl’s Story

Site created on August 13, 2018

Karl was taken to the ER early Wednesday 8/8/18 by paramedics,  showing signs of a stroke. He was immediately taken for a CT scan that showed a clot in the left side of his brain.  He was taken to to the OR where they removed that clot but found another clot farther back that could not be removed.  He was placed in ICU.  He was able  to look to his left and move most of his left side; however, he was unable  to move the right side of his body.  Later in the day, Karl experienced two seizures,  which were likely the result of the stroke.  Karl's brain started to swell.  He was put on IV sedation and a ventilator in the hopes of decreasing the swelling.  On Thursday,  an MRI was performed which showed that the stroke had affected the rear portion of the left lobe of his brain that controls vision, speech, cognitive function and memory.   After trying an IV drug to reduce the swelling,  the neurosurgeons did a craniotomy on Friday night  to relieve the pressure on his brain.   The neurosurgeon stated that the damage from the stroke was far more extensive than any of the scans has showed.   Karl remained on the ventilator and sedation on Saturday.  Multiple CT scans have been done to  check on the extent of the swelling. There has been little change.   On Sunday morning, the sedation was discontinued to see if Karl would to awaken in order to evaluate  his neurological and cognitive status.  However, Karl did not awaken or respond to pain stimuli on Sunday.  He did not wake up on Monday. He is not responding in any way.   The fact that Karl has not awakened has caused the physicians to give the family a very grim prognosis.  Today, Tuesday, the family met with a palliative care support team to discuss the options available.

Karl loved fishing, especially with his friends and family. We have may fond memories fishing with him in the lakes and rivers of Colorado. His love for fishing drives Karl’s final wish – to take a kid fishing. This can be accomplished in a couple of ways: Buy a fishing pole, give it to a kid and take them fishing. Donate to Christian Outdoor Fellowship of America (COFA) by mail: COFA P.O. Box 18605 Golden Colorado 80402 or online http://cofausa.org/ - top right Donate.  On either check or online donation, in the memo section indicate “In Memory of Karl Brockmeier.  Donate to a charity of your choice that sponsors youth fishing events.  If you would like to bring fishing equipment to the service, we will arrange for it to be taken to local COFA chapter.  We hope you share your stories about fishing with us.
