Journal entry by Kara Miller —
Can you believe December 21 is TWO YEARS since the surgery to get rid of my breast cancer? I am so happy to be 2. I left the hospital in 2018 believing I was done with treatment and “only” had reconstructive surgery ahead of me. But we learned New Year’s Eve 2018 that in fact chemo was likely because they removed 9 centimeters of cancer (and both my breasts.) Also one micro bit of cancer was found post-surgery in a lymph node they already took out.
Two years later I am cancer free and in the final cosmetic step of reconstruction. The whole cancer journey was much worse than I expected, and much better at the same time- as I think of how many of you stepped up with thoughtful, practical help and support.
I always planned we’d celebrate to mark the anniversary of either the end of radiation or my surgery anniversary (which is how my doctors “date” my treatment for follow up). But with COVID-19, neither celebration was possible. So please plan to celebrate in style with us in 2021.
As for my other health “abnormal” results. Two quick updates:
1) I get to hang on to my abnormal large uterus.
2) My endoscopy was clear, so no celiac. So while I may get the “joy” of another colonoscopy in a year to see what’s going on, all that is manageable.
Merry Christmas to all of you.
