Kalie and Adam’s Story

Site created on February 2, 2021

UPDATED 2/16/2021.

On February 1, 2021 Adam was touring the Opus hut with his favorite backcountry friends. An avalanche occurred and buried 4 members of the party. One member was recovered with minor injuries. Adam and two others did not survive.

For a full report on the avalanche please go to the CIAC site:   https://www.avalanche.state.co.us/caic/acc/acc_report.php?acc_id=770&accfm=rep

Kalie is strong and working through each minute. Her focus is on Montana and Savanna, Benny, Pua and Hei Hei. She is receiving so many wonderful messages and prayers from our amazing community, so please leave those messages here so they can be digested in time. She is also cautious about COVID and would ask that visits are masked, short, and on the front porch when weather allows. Please text before coming by to make sure it's a good time. Please know that close friends and family are by her side.

Kalie and the girls are extremely humbled by the outpouring of love and support.  They are grateful for the generous support through Go Fund Me. ( https://gofund.me/956ba1dc )  The account will be closing at the end of the month.  A Meal Train has been set up to support the family with meals over the next few months.

A memorial concert for the 3 skiers lost is being planned for February 28th.  The event will be live streamed.  A celebration of life for the Vail Valley community will be held in the late spring, and a ceremony for family and friends near Adam's hometown Anacortes, Washington is being planned for mid-summer.  Kalie will post updates regarding these events as details are finalized.

Journal entry by Kalie Palmer

As I come up for air after the planning and hosting 2 celebrations of life for Adam, I am filled with so much love and gratitude for all of you who have helped me and celebrated with me along the way. The Eagle celebration felt just perfect. We definitely did the day Adam’s way!! I didn’t know how we could even come close to that in Anacortes. But the celebration there last weekend was just as perfect in it’s own way! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
As time allows, I intend to share pictures and videos from the services in the coming days and weeks and also share some exciting events and endeavors inspired by Adam.
First and in the interest of time, I need to let you know of an event in Seattle, Washington on August 6th. A wonderfully generous high school friend of Adam’s is an amazing artist and has an art exhibition in Seattle in a few weeks. At each of his exhibitions, James Kerry Baldwin auctions off a piece of art and donates the proceeds to a cause he cares about. For this event, he is supporting my girls, Montana and Savanna and will be donating the proceeds to their 529 college fund. I am amazed and humbled by his desire to support kids he has never met, all in honor of his high school friend, Adam, who he hasn’t seen in years. But it doesn’t surprise me either as that’s just the kind of relationship Adam had with so many. It didn’t matter how long it had been since you had spoken with Adam or how many times you had hung out with him, he made you feel special, like you were his good friend. And you were! If you are in the Seattle area and would like to attend, click HERE or visit the Facebook event page HERE . Feel free to share with others! Thank you!
