Kaiulani’s Story

Site created on October 14, 2012

Hello loved ones,

Updated December, 2013 – Welcome. For those of you just joining my journey, you can get the history below or scroll back through my journal. A new chapter of my story started in November, 2013 when metastases and possible tumors were found by brain MRI in the leptomeningeal soft tissue surrounding my brain, my cerebellum, and my parietal lobe. The prognosis is not good but, so far, I have no symptoms and nothing has shown up in my Cerebrospinal fluid. I am in Hawaii on the beach I grew up on, meditating on light, peace, love, and healing. I am on and off a new chemo drug as it makes me too ill. Unless symptoms appear before then, the plan is to have a followup MRI at 8 weeks at Christmas time in Seattle. That will determine future treatment options. My goal is that the metastases disappear and are no longer present. This not the end of my story. Love you.

On Oct 3, 2012, I was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer, my entire spine full of tumors, my mobility limited. With the help of beautiful friends & family, I'm in Seattle with my sister and Zane, trying to kick cancer's ass back to hell. It's overwhelming but I'm happy to be here & fighting. I started chemo, radiation, and naturopathic remedies. All your love, support, advice is welcome. Check the pink Notification box for updates and check the past journal entries to get caught up. I have started a blog to help others at www.makesyoustrong.com (http://www.makesyoustrong.com). Love, Kai

I have 3 broken vertebrae and must wear a neck brace. The official story for Zane and those outside the circle is that I came to Seattle for the surgery to repair. That is not a lie... just not the whole truth. Zane is still in the Amazon and learning to be a man in the world without me, experiencing amazing things and that may come in handy sooner than we thought. He deserves to get the feeling of accomplishment, academic credits, celebration, and closure to his semester. Plus, I need the time here alone to set up my fight. So, please, honor my wishes and give him that. He will take care of me lovingly when he returns in early December.

It was a marathon and a miracle to get here made possible only by the combined herculean and loving efforts of my amazing Telluride  Amazon warrior queens and extremely generous sister and her family. I'll be posting reports here an you can log in to see them if you wish. This site allows you to create your own log-in and you have been pre-approved but info cannot be forwarded. If I've forgotten to include someone, they can send a request. You may wish to peruse back journal entries for practical information.

Have had a couple of weeks of huge days and am knackered. The outpouring of love and support from everybody has been so amazing and strong and loved and appreciated. Seriously, incredible, and blows me away. I'm sorry if I haven't had the chance to thank each and every one of you in the way that you deserve. I promise to get better at it as things settle down.

I will win...

Love you all so, so much!

Journal entry by Kaiulani Schuler

My oncologist and the radiologist both say there is no explanation for the activity from my PET scan and brain MRI other than the cancer being back. But, I went over my scans with a new radiation oncologist and he agrees with me that there is a possibility the brain mass is scar tissue and that the left breast hot spot is an anomaly. See, it doesn't FEEL like the cancer is back. So, I am not giving up my status as NED or NAD yet. Watching and waiting...
