Kady’s Story

Site created on September 5, 2020

On Friday, September 4th, my 15-year-old niece, Kady, was brought into urgent care by her mom for what they thought would be a simple Covid test.  She had been experiencing symptoms, and had received "The Letter" from their high school that they had been on campus with someone who had tested positive so they assumed she was as well.  My sister insisted that they do a chest x-ray even though her lungs sounded clear, and thank God they did!

The x-ray revealed a mass in Kady's chest that obviously was not supposed to be there.  They immediately sent Kady to the ER to do a CT scan to see if they could determine what they were seeing.  The ER then transferred Kady to Cook Children's in Fort Worth due to a suspected lymphoma.  In a matter of less than 24 hours, Kady went from going to urgent care for a Covid test to being in surgery for a biopsy of a mass next to her midline/esophagus, bone marrow biopsies in both hips, and placing a port in her chest for future treatment.

We are starting this CaringBridge site as a centralized place to keep Kady's friends and family updated on her treatment, and to share the immediate and long-term needs of the family as we focus on her healing.

Journal entry by Tammy Studley

Well, they were hoping to get to go home today but it’s not going to happen. Her blood counts looked like they were climbing, but dropped again (Hemoglobin 8.7, platelets 13, ANC 18). She is getting some much needed platelets now. Hoping this helps give her body the boost it needs to recover from this round of chemo.  They had warned that it would probably take longer to recover this time around.  After four rounds of back to back chemo, her body has just had enough.

On the bright side, Cook’s set off their Christmas fireworks last night right outside of their window so they had a front row seat! A few nurses came into their room and they made it a party! Christy told Kady that she had requested the private show to celebrate her last round of chemo and Kady believed her for about 5 seconds! 😂 😀 😁

Pray that this transfusion does the trick and that she starts to bounce back soon so she can come home soon!
