There is a link here on this site to "Donate to CaringBridge" which will support caring bridge and all they do for these websites which is a great cause, however that will not directly support Justin.

On Tuesday January 9th our world was shaken when we got a call that Justin was enroute to UHC - Ancshutz in Aurora, Colorado  with significant injuries following a pedestrian vs car accident. He had gotten in a rear-end motor vehicle accident at an intersection. While waiting for police to arrive to take his information, he was standing outside his vehicle looking in his trunk and was hit from behind by another vehicle. He sustained compound fractures from the waist down with complete loss of blood supply to the left leg, and significant vascular and bone injuries to both legs. He entered emergency surgery which lasted through the night to stabilize the vasculature in his legs. Miracles happen, and thanks to an amazing medical team he was able to regain feeling in his left leg. The surgical team has stated many times that Justin "got lucky"...which is a hard thing to swallow given the current circumstances, but we understand this could have been so much worse. His pelvis and spinal cord were missed by mere inches. Another surgery today has stabilized his right leg more completely. The status of saving the left leg remains unknown but we are remaining optimistic with the medical care he has received thus far. Currently, the next steps are unknown but Justin is looking at 3-4 more surgeries in the next several weeks, and a many week stay at UHC before transitioning to a rehabilitation center for a long road ahead.

Those of you who know Justin know how carefree, fun-loving, and happy he is. He is staying as positive as is possible during this life altering event. We are hoping this site offers those of you who know Justin and want to stay in touch frequent updates. Several family members will be managing this site as we take turns rotating to Denver to be with him during this time. We thank you all for your support from near and far.

*don’t look at the last picture if you don’t want to see his skin graft!*

A couple weeks ago, we found out that the doctors decided to not do the bone graft surgery, instead choosing to use a magnet-powered bone-lengthening device.

His surgery to put in this device to regrow his bone will happen tomorrow, May 9th. He’ll stay in the hospital for a few days after, and then the bone regrowth process will take several months. The device will allow the bone to grow 1mm per day, and with a few inches to grow it will be a slow process, but is less likely to cause complications, and will be easier to ensure the left leg is the correct length.

Due to this change in plans, it will now be longer until Justin is able to put weight on his left leg which is very disappointing and has been tough news.

But we are optimistic about the surgery tomorrow, and Justin is excited for this next step in the process that means things are continuing to improve and heal!

The past few weeks have flown by!

  • Justin moved into his new apartment (and made it more homey with some plants!)
  • Went to the zoo
  • His friend TJ visited for a few days
  • Went to the movies a few times
  • Got dinner with Uncle Terry, Aunt Esther, and cousins who were in town for a wedding

Thoughts and well wishes for tomorrow’s surgery will be much appreciated!
