Justin’s Story

Site created on September 25, 2019

Welcome Friends and Family,

We are using this website as one place to update everyone on our story. Thank you for all the prayers, love and support, and please keep it coming as Justin battles cancer in this season of his life! Here is his story with Oral cancer:

About 10 years ago a dentist found a white spot on Justin's tongue which led us to see a specialist where they took the first biopsy. It showed that Justin had abnormal cells but it was not cancer at the time. We were told to motor if any changes and about 3 years later, when we lived in Asia, Justin noticed another spot.  The biopsy again showed just abnormal cells. In the fall of 2015, Justin had a discomfort again and after seeing a great doctor, they advised surgery and the biopsy that time was malignant. He was admitted shortly after to MD Anderson where he under went surgery which they felt like went very well and removed all to a safe margin.  The surgery did cause some loss of feeling and some minor speech difficulty but with his faith in Jesus and all the support he was able to have a full recovery. We have been monitoring it for the last three years, going to MD Anderson for routine scans and checkups and everything seemed to be under control.

About a month ago, Justin noticed a spot and went in right away. At this time it was a small spot and they thought it might help to get mouth guards on the top and bottom teeth to see if the teeth were causing trauma. They wanted to monitor for some time to see if it would heel on its own and did not appear to be cancerous. Justin went back on Sept 23rd to let Dr. Webber review everything. On Tuesday, Justin went to see Dr. Webber and there was a change where he was definitely concerned. He immediately performed a biopsy and also then ran an X-ray, blood work, and CT scan followed up on the next day with an ultrasound. All the tests were clear except the biopsy which came back malignant.  The doctors have decided that Justin is going to need surgery (Oct 10th) to remove the tumor in his tongue, remove lymph in his neck that might have microscopic cells that could grow in the future. He will be in the hospital for about a week with a feeding tube and tracheotomy tube so prayers are much need for the severity of this surgery.

As shocking as this news is to our family we are hopeful and trust that the Lord is in full control over Justin's body and ultimately his life. Justin is processing all this information and it has been an emotional time for our family so we would LOVE prayers for the following this week:

-How and what to share with the kids?
-Wisdom for the doctors
-Peace and rest in God's sovereignty in these two weeks leading up to the surgery
-For healing of the tumor

We appreciate your support, prayers and words of hope. I will update everyone when I receive information and I only ask if you interact with our kiddos to not use the word "cancer" as we want to minimize the stress for them during this time.

 We love you all,
Jennifer & Justin Hall

Journal entry by Jennifer Hall

A year ago yesterday marked the end of my radiation and cancer treatment. It was a small moment but representative of the overwhelming support and growth that happens through struggles. I have come to value every moment and give God the praise and glory for all the dedicated people and prayer that the Lord used to bring healing. I know that cancer did not just impact me but so many including my family and friends. I know that I am blessed to be cancer free for a second time and given more time to serve my God. I want to truly thank all those who selflessly supported my family and I through the last year and even now. I have learned so many lessons and pray that I can a chance to love others just a fraction of how I have been loved. The biggest lesson I have learned is a tangible picture of what love is. It is genuinely trying to put yourself in someone else’s situation and then serving them in what they need without regard to the impact on yourself. I have seen a tangible example of John 15:13. Greater love has no one  than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Lastly,  Merry Christmas from our family to yours!

Love Justin
