Day 67 - over two months since the stroke and a month since my last update. I apologize for the delay in updates, managing work and grad school and time at my moms has gotten the best of me! My mom has made some remarkable progress considering it’s only been two months, and she’s been home for just over a month. She still attends her outpatient therapy for 6 hours a day, M-F. She tends to come home exhausted, but they are working her hard and it has helped her tremendously! She no longer walks with the gait belt, which required one of us to walk alongside her while holding the belt in case she fell. In the last two weeks they have also had her stop using the wheelchair! Initially upon leaving the hospital, they had ordered her a custom wheelchair and we were still waiting for it to come in. Because she no longer needs it, the custom wheelchair was canceled! She still uses her quad cane which has the four legs at the bottom for extra support, but will be practicing transitioning to a normal single-legged cane this week in therapy. She has also practiced walking without the cane at all! Her therapists say she is an extremely hard worker ❤️ a shocker to no one! She also continues to have occupational therapy each day, as well as a cognitive therapy that helps with strengthening her memory. We’ve noticed a lot of little differences in her cognitively - during her month in the hospital and the first few weeks of her being back home, she couldn’t talk to anyone and needed silence while she was walking (in order to focus on her steps), or have more than one conversation happening in a room with her at a time. Since then, we’ve noticed her continuing conversations she was having/answering questions while walking, and feeling much less overwhelmed if more than one person is talking in the room with her. Her occupational therapist has had her playing different games on her iPad (like guitar hero!!) to strengthen her fine motor and reaction skills. My job teaching Kindergarten sure came in handy for her too, as her therapist requested I bring home different letter/number tracing sheets for her to work on her handwriting 😂 The stroke took the function of her right hand, and although she has made leaps and bounds since then, the handwriting and signing her name is still very tricky but we’re working on it! She still has a hard time with stairs and prefers to avoid them whenever possible. This will be a challenge she tackles as she gets stronger. Thank you for your continued thoughts and prayers despite the lack of updates! My mom is still very much herself and working so so hard to regain her mobility and function. She even stood in the kitchen the other night and made her chili with help from Derek! I am in awe of her. Brent, Derek and I are so appreciative of everyone who has stepped in, as am I for my brothers who do everything they can despite our conflicting work schedules, especially Derek. We couldn’t do it without our village!
