Judy’s Story

Site created on May 17, 2021

On May 14th Judy was driving home from Fae's house after helping to watch the grandkids. She fell asleep at the wheel in Portland, WI which took her car into a ditch then up the other side of the ditch. We believe her car went 100 ft in the air before landing again. From what she can remember she tried to wave someone down for 30 minutes. Her nephew Norm Kowitz happened to be out farming the field  her car was in. When he found her he called Brice then 911. She was taken by ambulance to Mayo La Crosse. Her imaging showed an L2 burst fracture, left wrist fracture, and right ankle fractures. She was then taken by helicopter to Mayo Rochester. Then next morning they performed surgery on her spine fusing from T11 to L4. This went well. They are still monitoring a conus medullaris injury (part of the spinal cord), but she appears to have full lower extremity strength. She will need to wear a brace around her trunk for 3 months while she is up an moving. Her wrist surgery is planned for 5/17 and hopefully right ankle on 5/18. She will be non-weight bearing on her ankle and wrist until they are fully healed. She is still currently in the ICU until her oxygen levels are better.  She is currently on a combination of BiPAP and oxygen.  We will try to update this page as we can. Thank you everyone for all the prayers and many offers of help. Please keep them coming as Judy recovers.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Elizabeth Nofsinger

Over the past month Judy has been having progressive lower right leg pain and weakness. Unfortunately multiple injections, physical therapy, and pain medication were not reducing her symptoms. Her spine surgeon was able to see her Thursday, April 21st and highly recommended surgery. Luckily he was able to get her in the next day for surgery. He had to perform a decompression (removing a piece of the vertebra to make more space for the nerve) and lumbar fusion one level below her current fusion. The surgery took over 6 hours, but was successful, improving her nerve conduction by 70%! She had immediate relief from the right leg pain and doubled her strength scores. She will likely go home on Monday. She will need to wear her back brace for about 3 months and return to physical therapy.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. May 14th will be one year from the date of her accident. A lot has happened in the last year, but because of the accident she is cancer free. For that we are thankful!
