Joyce’s Story

Site created on February 8, 2018

On Dec. 29th, 2017 mom had surgery to repair her prolapsed bladder. They also performed a hysterectomy at that time. Prior to surgery they did an endometrial biopsy which was negative. After the surgery they did another biopsy. That one came back with some questionable results. Mom was referred to the U of M to discuss, what we thought were, precancerous cells.

On Friday, Feb. 2nd, 2018 we went to the appointment. Honestly, thinking nothing of it. We were in complete and total shock when the doctor told mom, "you have cancer." Time stood still in that moment. It was so unexpected. Obviously, hind sight is 20/20. How could we not have known? They wouldn't have given her the referral for nothing.

The following days were a bit of a whirlwind. We spent the weekend trying to process the news. Monday was the CT scan and cervical biopsy. Tuesday was a phone call from the doctor saying it hadn't spread. 😊 Wednesday was surgery for her port placement. Thurs., Feb. 8th was her first chemotherapy infusion.

Journal entry by Kimberly Rettke

It's now been 2 years and 4 days since mom was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. It's a bit hard to believe since it feels like yesterday that we heard the awful news!

I am happy to report that she is doing really well. She's busy working, being grandma, and living life as usual. It's been wonderful!

Mom still has check-ups every three months. Those exams tend to be a bit nerve-racking, but so far so good! We will pray for this positive trend to continue until she is fully cured. Right now we are simply grateful that her cancer seems to be in complete remission. PTL!

I was a little nervous to post this because I didn't want anyone to think something was "wrong." Thankfully, it's the exact opposite.  Everything is going great! Just thought I would share this good news. Thanks everybody!
