Journal entry by Sue Thomson —
Over the last 2 weeks John has fallen out of his chair, out of his bed, or when he gets up without telling us. As of yesterday after over 20 falls in 3 weeks, I got him a hospital bed. He is too weak and his foot is so painful he cannot even stand.
He is eating very little, almost next to nothing. He is still drinking fluids well. He had to have a foley catheter placed just a few hours ago to prevent further skin breakdown. He is alert generally around 2 - 5 pm, but pretty confused the rest of the day and night.
This is the saddest time in our lives. I am trying to help him not suffer but it is hard. Our 47th wedding anniversary will be this week on June 5th and when he is alert, I try to talk to him about some of our wonderful memories with music, travel, pool parties, and watching the 5 Dacey kids group up to be successfull adults.
We have been so lucky to have longtime wonderful friends through the years and have many of our friends for over 45 years. My Unitarian Universalist church family has been there for us too and we have been so blessed to have these lasting connections.
I just cannot write anymore tonight but know that we appreciate all the help and love that has been given to us.
