John’s Story

Site created on July 27, 2019

Hi lovely friends and family!

Thank you so much for supporting John through his journey to defeat Acute Myeloid Leukemia. We've been so amazed by the outpouring of love for him and we want to keep that up! Since his diagnosis on 7/24, he has been transferred to Mass General Hospital in Boston for chemotherapy treatment for AML. AML is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow and requires 7 days of chemo to kill off all the bad cancer cells plus 3 weeks for recovery and regrowth of his white blood cells (his immune system). Chemo started on 7/26 and will run through 8/1, and then the following 3 weeks will be recovery. All in all he should be at Mass Gen for about a month.

We'll be posting updates as treatment and recovery progress so stay tuned for more info soon. We hope you're able to visit or connect with him! See the post below for more details on visits.

Thank you all for your love, prayers, humor and positive thoughts as John conquers cancer! His strength and good spirits along with the support of his community will undoubtedly get him through this bump in the road.

We love you all!

Journal entry by Lisa Marshall

Hello Friends and family!,

It's amazing how fast the winter has gone while staying isolated and following the recovery protocol. I am now 67 days old and closing in on one month left in my 100 days of "house arrest" as Lisa calls it.  Outside of side effects and some symptoms of the transplant, everything is going on track. I visit Mass General once a week so they can keep an eye on all my counts, etc.
An event like this certainly puts you at "ground zero" and changes your perspective on many things.  I have certainly gained a deep appreciation for simple things that we take for granted and the importance of relationships past and present. I have been blessed in so many ways and amazed at the good things that come to life out of adversity.  There are so many.....one of which has been the people who are not in my normal "orbit" who have reached out to me.  My emotional status (which my medical staff says is hugely important) has always been good and the best explanation for that is the incredible support I am receiving through thoughts, prayers, cards, texts, phone calls, visits and rides to Boston. Thanks so much!!  All these things support my healing process!  In closing I will say that we are planning a recovery celebration party sometime in the spring so keep your eyes peeled for an invite in the future.   John
