You never know how long each of life’s chapter will last. John and I entered our third chapter of life - retirement - in 2022. The first two years have been filled with adventure. We moved to Durham, NC and immediately found community and a love of our new home state. We traveled extensively, cherished our family, picked up new hobbies and volunteered. John enthusiastically volunteered at a local bourbon distillery and the area performing arts center.
The year 2024 has presented a new adventure. John has been diagnosed with what three specialists believe is Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer for which there is no cure. Our retirement chapter will be shorter than imagined.
Tomorrow, John will meet with the neurosurgeon and we will know more. We are praying surgery will be this week. We will maintain updates with our network of friends and family through this platform. It is difficult to share this news multiple times daily. We hope you understand.
We know this next adventure will be difficult and are approaching it with recognition we have had a blessed marriage and he, a blessed life.
This morning John and I participated in the Duke Brain Tumor Center’s Angels Among Us fundraiser. John walked a short distance in the survivor Walk of Hope. I did not fully appreciate how many children are diagnosed with brain cancer. It was both difficult and uplifting to be involved as a survivor and caregiver.
