John’s Story

Site created on February 4, 2024

Our family received the news of John’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis on Friday, February 2nd, 2024. We are gearing up to fight strong as we meet with various doctors and specialists to determine the right course of treatment.

In this journey, John is choosing to focus on embracing the holy chaos. While we may have a desire to plan the situation, there are many variables that we simply cannot control. Embracing the holy chaos means trusting in God’s plan and finding the joy in each day. We are striving to live from a place of gratitude, not fear. Thank you to our community showing up with your support and prayers.

Thank you for following along with our journey on Caring Bridge. We’d love for you to leave a note for John under the ‘well wishes’ tab. Our family is blessed to be navigating this without additional financial stress, so any ‘tributes’ will be donated to the Lustgarten Foundation in support of furthering pancreatic cancer research. Love and blessings to all.

Journal entry by John Hueg

Thank you to all for your constant love, support and prayers.  It is felt in every moment.

Today Amy and I met with Dr Carr in oncology.  He is a pancreatic cancer MD PhD and part of our oncology team.  We received some good news and some challenging news. Some things are well controlled, the mass in my pancreas, liver and lung have not increased.     Dr Carr is very pleased with my vitality and also noted a steady improvement in a cancer marker.   These are all positive trends but I have some spots on my spine they think are most likely new.   We talked through options and we are choosing to begin a new chemo regimen that will be three weeks on and one week off.  The new chemo may better treat the entire system differently than our current treatment.  We have been blessed by amazing caregivers at Mayo, and I mean every single person from Valet to wheelchair assistants, nurses, techs, doctors, cashiers, everyone.   Joe was a tremendous companion yesterday during my tests plus driving both car and wheelchair!!!!   Cherished time with my son!

So we remain focused on joy and gratitude, embrace the chaos, and trust always in our amazing and healing God. Now we take our next step.   Next scans will be in mid June.
