Update: Dad's been at Evergreen Acute a rehab for one week now. He's working on left side muscle activation through physical and occupational therapy. He also has speech therapy, but it's more about swallowing and such as he can communicate just as well as he did pre stroke and his memory is also fine. He's a stubborn guy and has been working hard at his therapy (although when I sit in I often have to make sure he's not using his right side too often as we want the left side of his body to have more activation). He's eating bite size pieces of actual foods now, no more purée all the time! And through it all he's remained in good spirits. I try to visit as often as I can and my brother Jameson came to town last week so dad would have some more family time as he settles into therapy. We continue to take things day by day, and will have to make some changes and decisions in the coming weeks about how to wean him back into being at his apartment (he may need some assisted living for a few months before he can move back). I am still waiting on FMLA paper work to be approved by the state so Dad can get his benefit money and I can keep the bills paid, but for now finances are under control. We may re-evaluate and set up a gofundme depending on what his needs are post rehab but will not do so unless needed. But I remain optimistic. Three weeks ago I sat in a dark room with an ICU doctor telling me that he may not survive. But I can still talk to him every day and that is a great gift I'll never take for granted again. Love each other every day.
