John’s Story

Site created on May 13, 2018

John is the most wonderful person.  He is quiet, caring, very funny, can be quirky...you just have to know him to see it.  Several months ago John had a hip replacement surgery.  During the procedure, doctors found spots in the hip area and removed them at that time.  Soon it was discovered that these 'spots' were cancerous but they thought they got it all.  Months later, instead of getting less pain post-op, the pain worsened to the point that a 2nd hip replacement may be needed.  Instead, they found that the cancer had returned and spread further down his left leg.  The only option for this type of cancer is total leg and partial pelvis removal (hemipelvectomy).  Obviously this is a hard thing to accept for both John and his family but they have decided that it is much more important for him to be around to watch his 3 wonderful children grow up than to not seek this treatment.  There will be many significant changes in the near future so the support of friends and family will be very important.  Please keep John & family in your hearts & prayers.  Please leave words of encouragement on this page and we'll also keep you updated on the progress here.

I  will not be doing most of the work for the page, my best friend Res has offered to do this for me.  Thank you for the love and support. ~ Laura

Newest Update

Journal entry by Laura Fosha

Hello All,

Sorry for the long delay, I just often forget to update.  John and I talk about our thoughts, and then we get busy chasing kids and work.  End of January, John went to hospital in St Louis, wasn't a very productive meeting, but he did get another CT Scan at that time.  From Nov, there was a very little amount of growth again.  That was good to hear, because after the rapid growth on this leg last year, he was very stressed about waiting too long to know how the nodules in the lungs are growing.

At the spur of the moment in Feb, we decided to take the kids to Sanibel, FL for 2 days because this weather isn't any fun.  The day after we got back, we headed to Cancer Centers of America outside of Chicago for 3 days of information.  That was very mentally draining, but wonderful facility that put you in front of every type of doctor, chaplain, nutrition, mind and body and etc to hear what they all had to say.  Then, we got back and went to the doctor in town to see what he felt at this time again too.  Basically, didn't want to leave any rock not turned over.

From the results, we know he has 3 nodules in each lung for sure.  The best thing to do would be to surgically remove them and biopsy, but all would like to see one of them be 1 cm before any of that is done.  With that, John will likely go to Chicago again for the next CT testing sometime in late April, early May.  He really likes the facility there.

Otherwise, we are all geared up for busy Spring with kid activities.  I think the only free day we have in April is Easter day, but I live for the crazy time each year.  I love seeing the kids do their things.

I hope for warm weather for us all soon...and reach out whenever to ask questions.  Last weekend, good friend I was out with said she didn't want to bring up anything to me because didn't know how we were feeling.  The thing is, we get information, we process and discuss, decide a plan..and continue moving forward.  I just don't remember to do this page very well or to let everyone know how we are.  We are in a good place right now and planning away.
