John’s Story

Site created on March 20, 2023

Due to the amazing support that our loved ones have been showing, we want clear up some confusion around tributes on this website. To clarify, tributes go to fund the CaringBridge website, which is a worthwhile cause but do not go directly to Alice and John. If you made a donation thinking it was going to John and Alice and would like to get your money back,  please call CaringBridge at 651-452-7940, and they will refund your donation.  You can also reply to the email confirmation you received and say that you would like your donation refunded because of that misunderstanding.

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.  On March 8th, John suffered a severe brain bleed while visiting his daughter Erica's family in Jakarta, Indonesia. He has had multiple CT scans, and there has been some stabilization and improvement with the initial bleed, but he still has considerable limitations in his physical and mental capacities. There has been an incredible outpouring of love and support, and we would like to share updates as we have them so Alice doesn't feel responsible for keeping everyone informed.  We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Kate Engstrom

Good morning, all.  Dad has been going through all kinds of different therapies and exercises at the rehabilitation facility this week and is making great progress as a result.  He has done everything from walking on different types of surfaces outdoors to practicing activities like cooking and shopping -- lots of real life scenarios to prepare for returning to life outside a medical facility.  Right now the plan is for him to be discharged sometime next week, and Mom is grateful to have lots of offers of help as she adjusts to having him home.  Steve, the kids, and I are headed up to visit Dad this afternoon and will spend the weekend with Mom to celebrate her birthday (which is on Saturday in case you want to reach out!).  We are encouraged by Dad's progress and are thankful for the support surrounding Mom as they step into the next stage of the journey next week.  With love and thanks, Kate
